Hey all, I obviously haven't been posting anything for a while as I've been super busy continuing work on the Oz: The Great and Powerful out in Michigan for the past several months. I really didn't want to miss the Christmas/ New Year post so here are a few of the cards I sketched for some well wishes to friends this past week. That last one was for the year 3011. Watch out for those f*cking lasers!

Canon's Imagin8tion with Ron Howard

These paintings were done for the wonderful Canon Imagin8tion project in which Ron Howard invited amateur photographers to submit their "most imaginitive" images based on several movie themes in order to inspire a Hollywood short film. The categories included setting, time, character, mood, relationship, goal, obstacle and the unknown. Work is always a lot of fun, but it's even better when you get to contribute it to something as creative and inclusive as this. I can't wait to see the film!

Been a little while, just moved yet again so gimmie a break. I'm back in LA and it's been nice the past few weeks, so nice in fact that after work I haven't felt the need to do any extra work..until now. This was a piece where I was really trying to focus on scale as I've been out to expand my worlds to a larger scale lately. I've always loved artists like John Harris and John Berkey who have been incredibly skilled at this.

What if everything ran on gas? I loved the concept when I heard about the premise for this soothingly hilarious commercial based on that question. The scene with the dentist totally gave me the chills. With any luck someone with a sense of humor and a soldering iron will put a gas-powered iphone up for sale on etsy.com.

Got inspired

I got inspired to start this one a little while back after watching a great Kekkai Kotaki interview where he was doing a doodle that turned into something great while he was answering an interviewer's questions. It was kind of a fun one as I didn't really have a goal in the begininning as far as what I wanted it to end up being so it took a few left turns and ended up being a big ass ship.

Last cave one for a while, I promise. I was doing some problem solving with this piece, and trying a different approach based on using the magic wand tool on a photo to lay some initial textures. Normally I would have painted over the textures a bit more, but I some of them ended up yielding interesting shapes so I decided to incorporate them more literally. It's still a bit crude as I haven't really given much attention to softening the edges, but I think it got the job done.

Just wanted to say thanks to those of you who were able to make it to the Career in Concepts lecture this past weekend. Working on tuning a new technique for developing environments quickly while retaining the ability to make major changes easily. This took around 3 hours, but could definitely use some clean up.

I think that's a P.F. Chang's over there.. Been boning up on some environments trying to crack a quick construction method that works for me. I've got taking a long time down pat on these two, but things are starting to come together. I really like the density of certain urban environments, as you may be able to tell from some of my past posts. I find that I get caught up in the detail and sometimes it ends up taking longer than planned in the beginning to work through a piece, but I'm going to start focusing on the main thrust of an image during it's initial inception and I think that'll make it move along a lot faster. I had some success with that kind of direct simplicity on the quick "Tome" sketch, so I'll have to apply that to a painting that requires more detailing and see how that works out.

Pyracantha was right (comment on previous post). The cut lines weren't all that clear so I decided to open it up. Ideally this would have massive ride height adjust-ability for off-road and high speed applications as well as to let people in and out more realistically. The old design did, but as this version was more or less a quick sketch the suspension doesn't really come off that way. It certainly deserves another visit at some point.

Wow, it's been quite some time since my last post! Suffice to say this year has been a busy one. This is a piece I've done for Charlene Wang, a good friend of mine who for the past year has also been keeping busy with a great new venture in China that takes the best of the ancient art of fine tea making and social enterprise and brings you a delicious tea that also helps train and employ woman. http://tranquiltuesdays.com In addition to the beautiful teas that Tranquil Tuesdays provides she also supports the amazing local artists of Jingdezhen, the porcelin crafting capitol of China for the past 1000 years, by showcasing their fine tea ware. I had the pleasure of being her very first client as she provided custom tea tins as party favors for my wedding, the graphics of which I guest designed. We were going to see this thing hit low low orbit and go zero G Virgin Galactic style when Tony had to make a quick trip from Cali to Washington, but for what I'm sure were many reasons it didn't make it in. Anyway, fun stuff! The final interior was designed by Nathanial West.

Good times. This started as an extension of the 3d holo system that Tony uses to design his toys throughout the film. One idea was that in this film you would get to see how the suit was assembled and disassembled through the awesome apple-esque work surface that covers Tony's entire garage. Michael Riva envisioned the suits on display in a clean black room at the back of the garage. Tony would walk in where a rush of air coming up from the grated floor would bring your attention downwards where you would realize that the Hall of Armor goes down another level or so. When activated one of the suits would lower through the floor on a cartridge delivering it to the machinery that disassembles it to be built onto Tony at the other end of the garage. You would see all this happening through the holographic interface covering the floor.

Jon Favreau eventually ended up going with the much simpler version--shown at top--that made it to the film.

My small contribution. So many people took a crack at the function this thing and it came out great in the end. I had my go after an all nighter doing one of many revisions for the Hall of Armor. Ryan Meinerding was the wizard that designed the look of the suit, George Hull the actual suitcase, while my crude mock up for deployment served to guide the fx crew as they figured out how the thing was actually packaged and clasped together.

Stark Expo

There were many buildings designed of which their placement in the expo was constantly in flux. I kept this image and the one above it clear and ready for an buildings on the site, but the idea of this very large split-domed pavillion got dropped and so they never got filled in.

This is an earlier version of the Stark Expo, which was then called the Roxxon Pavillion. The scale got a little too grand and I had to pull back.

Lots and lots of buildings. Several artists attacked this large project in preproduction including Mark Goerner, George Hull, Nathanial West, Darren Doctherman and many more in post. They were highly diverse in style as they were representative of many countries and companies...not that you could tell with how fast they zoomed by. Mark Goerner and I did a lot of work for Tony's expo which happens to be a building that still exists from New York's 1964 World's Fair in Flushing Meadows.

To late?? Ok, this time it's really been a while. I apologize to anyone that has been checking the blog every so often only to be sorely disappointed by my lackluster updating practices. I won't get into excuses, but will say that there is lots of work I did for the Iron Man 2 movie that I can finally show.

I came onto the film initially to work on buildings for the Stark Expo. There were many slated for what was then to be a retro-futuristic re-imagining of Howard Stark's expo '74. It was a rigorous learning experience working with Production Designer Michael Riva who was ever energetic, inventive, kind and demanding. I definitely had to kick it up a notch to satisfy a loaded pre-production schedule in which a wide range of ideas were on the table; all of which had to be visualized to be a more relevant part of the conversation. There was a prescribed menu of work dictated by the script, but every once in a while there was the fun "what if we did this?" I worked on a wide range of designs for the movie and of course there were some that never made it to the screen as a three hour run time is frowned upon. Some of the designs I was fortunate enough to work on were significant to the story, some were not and didn't make the cut. I enjoyed creating all of them regardless.

On Norm Schureman

It's been over a week now and some things have run their course with the shock of hearing about Norm's passing. I just wanted to say some words of thanks for a man who always put me on the spot and beckoned me with a hearty smile to meet and surpass my potential. I was lucky enough to have taken two of his classes at Art Center and TA'd for two more. The short time I spent sketching with him were some of the most formative in my life as a designer and an artist. He was a kind and generous adventurer; the kind of guy you wish was your uncle. To my great fortune he treated me like family though I was only one of his many students. This was not only a matter of him taking a liking to me, but it was just the way he treated people. This was evident at the many get togethers he held at the house always populated by students and friends. He was as generous in sharing a beer as he was in sharing his home, his family, or his time. I will always hold a very dear place for Norm and his family in my heart.

Design from the inside out. This isn't the most thorough study of a nonextistant machine, but it was just a start in order to get the juices flowing with a pen again. I'm always enthralled by great mechanical design like what you might have seen in Akira and Ghost in the Shell--and in any number of anime films for that matter. It's been a challenging skill I've wanted to develop for some time so I'll put up more from as it comes.

Ok, that's probably enough domes now...Just did the sketch above while on a rare natural media kick. I wanted to see it with a little more fidelity so I did a painting inspired by it. I think it changed purpose a bit from something that looked like an organic shanty town to something a little more established. I see this as being an impromptu military complex built quickly from the surrounding indigenous materials. Let me know if you think of something better. :)

Just saw District 9 last weekend, actually saw it twice. It was such a great movie and I can't say enough about it. The film blew my mind with it's genre-crossing format and visual style, juxtaposing aliens and their technology with a South African slum. Shartlo Copley brings an amazing perfomance to an amazing character concept through a well-written script and a good amount of improv. I'm hard-pressed to think of a more conflicted unlikely hero than him...I'm going to get a portrait of Weekus 70hrs after exposure tattooed on my chest. :) Anyway, this painting was loosely inspired by that movie and it depicts the long-awaited arrival of a ship back to it's people. Whether or not they go back and bomb the earth is up to Niel Blomkamp.

Whew! It took a while to get something new on the blog. Work has been crazy for a while, but slowed just long enough for me to have a little fun on a painting that is totally different than what I've been doing for Iron Man 2. This painting started as a vehicle exercise and quickly materialized into a story vignette where a soldier takes some time to get to know a local of this ancient riverbank city. I love military hardware and technology and battles are exciting to watch in the movies, but I always find myself more compelled by the juxtaposition of said technology set against the backdrop of a more rural population--it's become quite common the last few wars. In that spirit, I'll be slipping in the calmer side effects of occupation from time to time.

Working on Star Wars, you would think that I got robots out of my system. I did get to do a few, but as it turns out that only added fuel to the flame. I've always loved mecha (I was a big fan of evangelion, armored core, zone of enders..) and I don't think I've really gotten a chance to explore them to the extent that I'd like so I did a few in different styles for fun. I'd also like to explore powered suits, and so hopefully before long I'll have a healthy army of these guys.

A Gift For a Friend

I warmed up by doing some studies of Mucha's work. They're not quite exact, but I was just trying to get a feel for his aesthetic sense in terms of composistion, line weights and the types of shapes and curve he used.

I never thought it would happen, but one of my oldest friends just got married. He met a great girl on a shoot in Japan and now he's snatched her and brought her back to live with him here in captivity. In the spirit of welcoming her to our great nation, I figured now would be a good time to put my skills to work in a painting that commemorates their wedding day. I wanted to cross-pollinate the simple graphic beauty of Japanese woodblock prints with the Art Nouveau elegance of Mucha's posters. This is very different to the work I've been normally doing and so it was lots of fun and quite a challenge. I worked on a couple of others before I reached this version which I feel can be appreciated by both my friend and his wife. Anyway, congratulations to them!
